A Rhythm-Filled Evening: Inside Our Group Drumming Workshop

There’s something magical that happens when a group of people comes together with no expectations—just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to play. That’s exactly what unfolded during our recent free trial session led by Abby at Pulse Play Circles. What started as a simple introduction to group drumming turned into an immersive experience of connection, laughter, and surprisingly deep presence.

Setting the Tone: Slowing Down Before the Beat Begins

The session began with a gentle relaxation exercise and an invitation to pause, breathe, and arrive fully in the moment. From there, participants were introduced to basic drumming techniques, easing everyone in regardless of experience level. No pressure, no perfection—just rhythm.

Breaking the Ice (With Rhythm, Of Course)

Instead of typical introductions, Abby brought in a Name Game but with a twist. Each person expressed their name through rhythm. It was playful, a little unexpected, and instantly broke down barriers. Within minutes, the group felt more connected not through conversation, but through shared sound.

The Egg Rhythm Game: Coordination Meets Fun

One of the highlights of the session was the egg rhythm game.

Participants passed eggs around while following changing rhythmic patterns, and this group absolutely nailed it. Their coordination, focus, and awareness of each other were genuinely impressive. Eggs were barely dropped, and the energy in the room was high.

But beyond the fun, participants noticed something deeper:
👉 It required real attention to others
👉 It sharpened concentration
👉 And it created a sense of collective flow

Listening, Interpreting, Creating

Through a call-and-response activity, participants explored how they interpret rhythm. Abby would play a pattern—and each person would respond with what they thought they heard. The results were fascinating. No two interpretations were the same, yet everything blended into a unique collective sound. It was a simple exercise, but a powerful reminder of how we all perceive and respond differently.

Laughter, Movement & Play

The energy continued to build with a game called Around the World.

A single beat would travel around the circle, with direction changes triggered by a clap. Soon, additional actions were added, and with that came bursts of laughter, missed beats, and joyful chaos. It was light, engaging, and brought out a sense of play that we often forget in our day-to-day routines.

A Playground of Sound

As the session unfolded, participants explored a wide variety of percussion instruments:

  • Wooden frogs and crickets
  • Bells and jingle bells
  • A steel tongue drum
  • Egg shakers
  • Squeaky piggies and bird sounds
  • Everyday objects like tin cans and measuring cups

Each instrument brought its own personality, some soothing, some playful, some completely unexpected.

Losing Track of Time (In the Best Way)

One of the most immersive moments came during a game called Pieces of Eight.

Participants chose numbers, and when their number was called, they added a note to the evolving soundscape. At times, a few participants would continue playing while others switched instruments—shifting the mood and texture of the music.

Something clicked.

The group became completely absorbed in the experience. Time seemed to disappear. What felt like a few minutes turned out to be nearly 40.

When everyone finally looked up, it was already 8:20 PM.

Ending on a Calm, Reflective Note

To close the session, Abby introduced the soothing sound of the ocean drum. Participants were guided through a short visualization imagining themselves by the beach, with waves gently washing away stress and tension. It was the perfect ending: grounding, calming, and deeply restorative.

Reflections & Feedback

After the session, participants shared their thoughts through comment cards—and even took the time to scan the QR code and leave reviews.

A clear theme emerged:
✨ They felt present
✨ They felt connected
✨ And most importantly, they felt good

More Than Just a Workshop

This wasn’t just a drumming session.

It was:

  • A space to disconnect from routine
  • A chance to connect without words
  • And an experience that stayed with participants long after it ended

At Pulse Play Circles, that’s exactly what we aim to create: moments where rhythm becomes connection, and play becomes presence.
